Class size is limited and peer/mentor playing is supported and encouraged. Students will need to purchase a method book and supply their own instruments (see our buying guide).

The Beginning 1 class is for students with little or no prior knowledge of the guitar. Attention is focused on proper hand positions, 1st position note reading, tablature reading, natural/1st position chords, and strum patterns. Popular songs are incorporated into the lessons. An informal group performance and party is scheduled for the end of the semester.

The Beginning 2 class is a continuation of our starting class, or for those students with a base knowledge of the skills listed above. Attention is focused on hand strength for barre chords, baree chord shapes for 5th and 6th string roots, Power chords, pentatonic scales, and chord pairs. Popular Rock, Pop, Alternative, and other genre songs are incorporated into the lessons and students are encouraged to find and select songs for the group ensemble and the end of semester performance.

The Rock Band class is a continuation of our Beginning 2 class, or for those students ages 10 and up with a base knowledge of the skills listed above. Concentration is on learning popular songs, the different styles and genres in pop music, and scales needed for improvisation and soloing. Students will have the opportunity to play with a house back-up band and learn the skills necessary for playing with others in a group.

JAM CAMPS - For high beginning and intermediate guitar players ages 10 to 17. Campers will be split into small band groups and will have the opportunity to learn and jam with the BMS House band 'Hooliganism' and players of their own age and skill level. Please contact us for information on our popular guitar/bass camps.

PRIVATE - our current Fall schedule is completely full and we have a waiting list for openings. Private lessons run $35 per hour with a minimum of 4 available lesson slots per month ($140 total tuition).

Classical (nylon string), Folk (steel string), and Electric (unplugged) guitars are all appropriate for either class levels and good quality instruments are highly encouraged (Please don't start a student on a poor quality instrument - this only breeds frustration and will deter progress). Please note that we have agreements with several local high-quality guitar stores to offer Backwoods student discounts on the purchase of guitar packages (acoustic or electric guitars, amp, straps, cords, etc). Please contact us for additional details.
