BACKWOODS MUSIC STUDIO - Contact and Policy Information (SEPT. 2018)
______________
LESSONS:
Lessons are usually about 50-55 minutes per session. Students can enter and wait briefly inside, but please do not interrupt other student lessons by coming early or staying late. Parents are welcome to stay for the lesson (and many do) and guest wi-fi is available for your use.
TUITION:
Payment for lesson tuition is always due the first week of every month in full.
CANCELLATIONS:
WEATHER - WE FOLLOW WAKE COUNTY SCHOOL CLOSINGS DURING ADVERSE WEATHER EVENTS. In other words, if the schools are closed we are usually closed. When in doubt, text or call for hours during bad weather. Credit for weather related closings will be used in a scheduled make-up lesson. Credits for missed weather related closings are not carried into the next month. Available make-up times are always posted on our website schedule page.
IF YOU NEED TO CANCEL - We ask for the courtesy of a 24 hour notification on lesson cancellations, via email or directly to my cell at 919-271-8473 (text messages are also fine). This will allow us to schedule other student make-up times into your slot and avoid wasted hours on our schedule. With 24 hour notification a student will be eligible for a make-up lesson. Available make-up times are always posted on our website schedule page.
Please NOTE that Tuition is still due on lessons cancelled with less than 24 hour notification at our discretion.
IF I NEED TO CANCEL - WE also reserve the right to cancel and or move lessons to meet our own schedule needs. Credits will be moved forward into the next month or a make-up time will be offered. Occasionally I'll have last minute gig opportunities or personal business that may take me away from the lesson times.
Please NOTE that we do not offer refunds on cancelled lessons but will always honor payed lessons with make-ups or tuition credit.
Noel does the general scheduling, so please work with her on any special needs or to juggle a make-up.
PRACTICING:
I realize that most if not all of my students have heavy school or work schedules. My expectation is that the student is motivated to play, becomes excited as their new skills emerge, and starts to enjoy the process of learning new chords and songs. The reality is that new students are often surprised that guitar is a discipline that requires their attention and steady practice (as opposed to Guitar Hero buttons). Finger tips will hurt, notes will buzz, rattle, and hum, and only time and concentration will conquer early lesson doubts and frustration. Students should try and practice at least 2 times during the week, absolutely NOT on the day of the lesson, for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Most of the early time is spent just finding how to generate a good tone on the instrument and in keeping it in tune. Obviously the priority will be school work and all that goes with homework responsibility, but practice time can usually be found by 'borrowing' from other activities (TV, Playstation, etc).
HAVE FUN!:
Hopefully the students start to realize they'll be learning a skill they can keep for the rest of their lives. I've had several students go on to take music classes in college, form their own groups, perform at school events, and actively perform in the Raleigh area. Some of my students have even had incredible experiences performing in other countries on mission trips or family gatherings.
Music should be something they WANT to learn, not HAVE to learn, and I make every effort to keep it relaxed and fun.
As always, please let us know if you have any questions or anything we can help with. We look forward to a long musical journey.
